Why Stone Crabs?
Stone Crabs are not only a delicious choice for your meal, but also one of the most sustainable types of seafood you can find. Only one claw is removed at a time because the crab needs the other one to defend itself. Females are never declawed, hooks are never used and these crabs are never speared in their capture.
After the claw is removed, which can weigh up to 25 ounces and makes up about half the crab’s weight, the stone crab is returned to the water. The removed claw will actually regenerate and takes about one to two years to return to the legal size for harvest. Season for stone crabs in Florida runs from October 15th to May 15th and this is the best time to stop into Joe’s for a plate of claws.
Joe’s is open from May 15th to July 28th from 6pm to 10pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 6pm to 11pm Friday and Saturday. When in season, from October 11th to May 12th, Joe’s is open for lunch from 11:30am to 2pm, Tuesday through Saturday, open for dinner from 5pm to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and from 5pm to 11pm Friday and Saturday.
