A History of the Miami Dolphins

November 11, 2016

The Miami Dolphins were the 9th team to be added to the American Football League in 1966. Founded by Joseph Robbie, this amazing team is the pride of Miami. Since the 1960s, they have not only increased in popularity, but they have gained a cult following around the nation. While most teams struggled to establish themselves once the league began, the Miami Dolphins quickly set themselves apart from the rest by recording a perfect season in 1972. During the historical year of 1972, the Dolphins won the AFC Eastern division, the AFC championships, and then went on to defeat the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl.

The Don Shula Era

During the early years, Don Shula coached the Dolphins. The most successful head coach in professional football history, the Dolphins posted losing records during only two of the 26 years of his head coaching. In 1983, another football legend joined the team—Dan Marino. This prolific player led the Dolphins to numerous wins and championships. Since the 1970s, the Dolphins have gone on to win 13 AFC Eastern Division Championships and five AFC titles. Dan Marino, one of the NFLs most iconic players, broke the record in 1984 by throwing 48 touchdown passes. He went on to break many other records before retiring in 2009.

A New Stadium

As more and more championships were won, the need for a larger stadium was evident. While the Orange Bowl had been the Dolphins’ home for years, the ever-increasing fan base demanded more seating. To allow more fans to see the Dolphins play, Joseph Robbie built a privately-funded stadium, the Hard Rock Stadium, in 1987. It seats 73,000 people and has served as the site for the Super Bowl in 1994, 2006, and 2009.

Today’s Dolphins

Currently, the Dolphins practice under head coach Adam Gase. Ryan Tannehill is the team’s star quarterback. As was true in the 1970s, the Miami community still rallies around its football team. This tight-knit city is more like a family and their pride for their team is evident everywhere you turn.
