Art Deco: The Spirit of South Florida

April 21, 2011

Do the sleek, curved lines, porthole windows, glass building blocks, Aztec motifs and tropical pastels found in classic Art Deco architecture send you over the moon? You are not alone, and the best place to find these beautiful designs is right here in Miami Beach.

Art Deco gets its name and inspiration from the 1925 Paris Exposition of Decorative Art and Industrial Models. This radically modern movement hit Miami in the late 1920’s and combined with elements of the Mediterranean Revival movement to make Miami’s own distinctive “Med-Deco” style.

Miami Beach’s Art Deco District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, has the largest gathering of classic Art Deco architecture (built between 1923 and 1943) in the world. Art Deco has also inspired design throughout all of south Florida and you can see its distinctive elements everywhere you look.

If just viewing Art Deco architecture isn’t enough for you and you long to have your own Art Deco inspired home, working with a REALTOR® who understands this unique type of architecture is the best way to make your dream come true.
