GABLES BY THE SEA & PINECREST BY THE SEA

What began as a few scattered houses in the 1950s has blossomed into one of South Florida’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Today, the Miami gated community known as Gables by the Sea and Pinecrest by the Sea boasts about 520 homes. The community is very unique in that the majority of homes lie in the municipality of Coral Gables while the other portion of homes within the same gates, lie in a separate municipality, The Village of Pinecrest. The neighborhood is often referred to as Gables by the Sea, but homeowners, neighbors and real estate aficionados know that the more appropriate name for the neighborhood is Gables by the Sea and Pinecrest by the Sea.

The neighborhood is very family-oriented and enjoys 24/7 security. The lovely Coral Bay Park is located within the gated community. Residents enjoy gathering at the park for neighborhood events and family gatherings. At the end of one of the main streets, Lugo Avenue, residents can find a beautiful view of Biscayne Bay. Many of the homes in Gables by the Sea are on canals and have a waterfront view. All of the waterfront homes in Gables by the Sea are in Coral Gables. The neighborhood draws fishing and boating enthusiasts from all over South Florida.

HOA History

Gables by the Sea and Pinecrest by the Sea has a voluntary Home Owners’ Association, run by residents who volunteer their time to better their community. The Coral Bay Property Owners’ Association was formed on March 30, 1964, reflecting the legal description of the southernmost Coral Gables subdivision, east of Red Road and fronting Biscayne Bay. Its initial purpose was to object to zoning other than residential. A convenience store was proposed at Coruna and Red Road, as well as a high-rise at the eastern end of Bella Vista.

With the help of the late Eleanor Schockett, a former Miami-Dade County circuit court judge who served as association president, the group was able to ensure properties in the neighborhood were all zoned for single-family residences.

In 1989, the volunteer group changed its name to “The Gables by the Sea Homeowners’ Association”. The section of the neighborhood west of Red Road, in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, officially became part of the Village of Pinecrest when it was incorporated in 1996.

In 1997, with the support of the HOA, the guardhouses opened, after a majority of property owners in the neighborhood voted to set up a special taxing district for Miami-Dade County to build and operate two guardhouses with around-the-clock security guards.

In 2012, the HOA board added Pinecrest to its name in its bylaws.
