High Society Weddings

March 9, 2012

With the average wedding topping out at over thirty thousand dollars, imagine what the mega-wealthy are willing to splurge on a matrimonial ceremony.  One hundred thousand to over a million dollars is not unusual for those who belong to the wealthiest echelon of society.  Private jets often fly guests to exotic locations for ultra luxurious destination weddings.  The finest hotels are booked for several nights and extravagant gourmet meals are served to guests.  Gratis spa services are often made available.  Entertainment is offered each evening and the headliner is frequently a well-known performer of star quality.

There have been numerous extravagant weddings in the Twenty first century.  One of the most publicized was that of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills in 2002.  It cost a whopping three million dollars.  A castle in Monaghan, Ireland was rented for the occasion.  Flowers cost $145,000 and the tab for a fireworks display was $150,000.

But perhaps the standard for posh weddings was set by the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.  The price tag for this royal wedding was a staggering thirty-four million dollars. But even this stately wedding was not the most expensive wedding of the new millennium.  That title belongs to the wedding of Varnisha Mittel and Amit Bhatia.

The bride is the daughter of a billionaire steel magnet.  The groom is an investment banker.  The wedding took place in and around Paris, France in 2006.  It cost seventy-eight million dollars.  The exclusive chateau at Vaux Le Viscomte, which was built in the seventeenth century, was rented for the occasion. Over 1000 guests were flown from India to France on twelve chartered Boeing jets.  The wedding lasted for five days, and guests were “put up” in five star hotels in Paris.  The invitations to the wedding were twenty pages long and were sent encased in a silver book. A world famous Calcutta chef and his staff of fifty prepared over 100 Indian dishes for guests to enjoy.  The wine for the reception cost 1.5 million dollars.  Lavish gifts were provided for family and friends.  Even the gardens of the famed Eiffel Tower were cleared for a huge fireworks display. This wedding has garnered a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most expensive wedding ever recorded!
