Incredible Coney Island Furniture by Uhuru DesignNovember 5, 2012
Luxury furniture has changed a lot in recent years and the newest trend is to own pieces that have been crafted from discarded materials. An increasingly trendy statement, these items follow the four R rules of design and are made from recycled, reclaimed, repurposed and/or reused materials.
Uhuru is one of the current leaders in the industry and is quickly building a reputation as the company to turn someone else’s trash into another person’s new treasure
Founders Jason Horvath and Bill Hilgendorf are well known for their unique and artistic designs in this field and are the driving forces behind Uhuru. Horvath is well respected for his involvement in the NYC art scene and his creative ability is easy to see in all of the company’s well-designed furniture.
Hilgendorf’s passion for creating beauty from unwanted materials began at an early age. Together, these two eco-friendly entrepreneurs create simple but elegant pieces of furniture that are almost completely unrecognizable from their original form.
So far, the Coney Island line is their most notable work and is constructed from the actual Ipe timber that was once a part of the Coney Island Boardwalk. The incredible design of this line was inspired by the visual appeal and amusement park theme of Coney Island itself and which is truly a part of the great city’s history.
Most distinguished is the Cyclone Lounger, inspired by the famous rollercoaster of the same name. This wonderful piece captures the very essence of the park and consists of “undulating dark and light Ipe” held together by white metal poles that crisscross in a way that is quite reminiscent of the coaster itself. This luxurious and functional lounger is just one example of the many pieces of furniture available from Uhuru.
Uhuru has found a way to transform trash into something beautiful and along the way they have captured the motif of Brooklyn’s world famous Coney Island.
