Successful Negotiations

February 22, 2011

Everyone likes to win. But in real estate, the best way to feel like a success is to have both sides leave the table feeling good about the deal. Even in high-end real estate, where transactions are more complex and the financial stakes are higher, the best way to reach your target is through the spirit of cooperation.

For most people, price is the highest priority and is given the most attention. But just about every detail can be negotiated: price, terms, dates for the home inspection and moving, who pays for repairs, appraisal and closing costs, and what personal property will be included in the sale. In coming to terms on these issues, the needs of each party might conflict on some points, so it’s essential to be clear on which points are most important to you.

The best qualities to bring to the bargaining table are clarity about your priorities, the ability to listen to others needs and trust that you will all come away satisfied. Your REALTOR® is an expert with negotiating real estate transactions and will be an invaluable asset when it comes time to work out an equitable situation.
