Where to Buy Furniture Pieces That Will Transform Your Home
October 2, 2018Miami is home to branches of some of the most innovative furniture design stores in the world. Stores like Roche Bobois, which revolutionized the sectional sofa, and Artefacto, which draws inspiration from almost every corner of the world, are only some of the store’s where you can find pieces that will transform your home.
Roche Bobois
Roche Bobois started as a collaboration between the Roche and the Chouchan family in the early 1950s and what started as a modest family store in France, developed into an industry-changing brand and one of the today’s most famous upscale furniture stores. The store’s early collection of contemporary furniture selection was heavily influenced by Bauhaus designers, which you can still see traces of today. In 1971, Hans Hopfer brought Roche Bobois to the next level with the conception of the Mah Jong sofa. Known today as one of the most iconic sofas in the world, it was designed to be a part of the Roche Bobois “signature collection.” The revolutionary and adaptable sofa can be transformed between an armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed. It serves as a place to “rest, play or lounge,” according to Roche Bobois. Over the years, the brand has collaborated with multiple fashion houses that have created custom prints for the Mah Jong collection, including Missoni Home, Kenzo Takada and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Knoll
This world-renowned furniture store has been the number one destination for modern furniture pieces since 1938. This year marks Knoll’s 80th anniversary and although much time has passed since the Bauhaus era, the brand is still proving their commitment to the era’s modern and sustainable design principles through their current collection. The founders, Hans and Florence Knoll, were students at the Bauhaus School and the Cranbook Academy of the Art, which is where their unique style was born. Florence and her husband, Harry Hood Basset, the board Chairman of Southeast Bank at the time, were longtime residents of Gables Estates. The stylish couple constructed a 5.5-acre estate with five bedrooms and six and a half baths on a private waterfront cove in 1972. The property, located at 1 Arvida Parkway, is one of the most prestigious in all of Miami to this day.
Throughout the years, the brand has collaborated with multiple designers including David Rockwell, Antenna Design, Barber Osgerby and Formway Design. The store specializes in both residential and workplace furniture design. Florence Knoll was a pioneer in workplace design as she is credited with the idea of “the modern office.” The store is also considered amongst the most environmentally friendly and conscious in the furniture industry. Their environmental initiatives’ three pillars are climate change, third-party certification and environmentally sensitive materials. The brand’s continuous efforts to be environmentally friendly has been a grand success as they have exceeded their goal in reducing their emission of greenhouses gasses by a whopping 23 percent through what they call the Carbon Disclosure Project.
