Your Moving Plan: Two Months Before
June 30, 2016Moving is stressful and requires proper planning, especially if it involves selling a home and buying a new home. You should plan ahead and know what needs to happen well before the moving day. Here are a few action items to check off your list at least two months before the big day arrives.
Compare Quotes from Movers
If you plan to hire professional movers, you will want to get at least three quotes. This is a great way to save time and remove some of the stress of moving. Contact a few local companies and even a national company or two in order to get a variety of moving quotes. Keep in mind, the lowest quote isn’t always the right choice.
Make sure the moving company only provides bonded and insured workers. You can even check the company with the Better Business Bureau and read online reviews to make sure you’re hiring a truly professional moving company.
Get Your Moving Boxes
You will have the option to pack everything yourself or have the moving company provide this service. If you plan to pack yourself, you will need to get moving boxes ahead of time. You can score free boxes from family, friends or any shipments you have coming in over the next few months. Sometimes, you can get them from a grocery store or a local ABC store, as well.
Moving boxes can also be purchased online or from your moving company. This is a good way to go when you need specialty boxes for flat screen TVs, artwork, wine glasses and other specialty items.
Start Packing
Even two months out, you can start packing items you don’t use very often. For example, if you have beach gear and have no plans of going to the beach, it can be packed. Often, you can start packing things that are out of season, as well.
Start Eliminating Unwanted Items
As you start the packing process, this is a great time to purge unwanted items from your life. Whether the item is broken or just something you no longer need or want, it can be removed from your home. You can donate items to a local thrift store, sell them in a garage sale or simply throw them away.
Start Planning for the Food You Own
At two months out, you will still have to do some grocery shopping, but it’s a good time to start planning meals around what you own. If you have a number of items in your pantry and cupboards, you can start using them up to lessen the amount of food you move when “move day” arrives.

It’s smart to start with your packing and moving preparations as soon as you know you’ll be moving. The more you can do ahead of time, the less you’ll have to worry about on the day of the move.
