5 Important Tips for Picking Out Your Next Luxury Watch

April 30, 2012

In a world of iPhones, Laptops, Bluetooth and digital clocks, those most concerned with presenting an image of luxury still maintain the importance of wearing a beautiful timepiece. Whether you’re a man or woman, I know that picking out the right luxury watch can be difficult. I’ve compiled this brief buyer’s guide to make it easier on you.

Here are 5 tips to buying your next luxury watch:

1.Swiss Automatic Movement – The little device inside a watch that makes it tic is called a “movement”. A Swiss automatic movement is a one that was made in Switzerland and functions off of kinetic energy generated by springs instead of battery power (automatic vs. quartz). Automatic movements have a sweeping second hand, and are generally regarded as more authentic and luxurious time pieces.

2.Sapphire Crystal – This is in reference to the watch window and what it’s made out of. Many cheaper watches use a synthetic crystal, but you want authentic sapphire.

3.Subtle and Crisp – Sometimes it’s hard to know what sort of design looks best. My baseline advice is to go with something that is subtle and crisp. Some people like having really obnoxious watches, but that’s personally not me and I don’t think it’s particularly attractive. When it comes to watches, sleek always looks good.

4.Chronographs Are Classy – A chronograph is an analog timer usually comprised of 3 different sub-dials – second, hour and 24 hour – to precisely measure long increments of time. It’s a handy feature to have and they look really nice.

5.Buy a Trusted Brand – Generally, Rolex is the only brand that actually increases in value as time goes on, aside from highly exclusive collections. That doesn’t mean Rolex is the only good brand of watches, however. Baume Mercier is a personal favorite of mine, and has some very elegant women’s watches as well as some really classy men’s. I also recommend Armani, Tag Heur, Omega and Cartier.

All in all, buying a luxury watch does not have to be difficult if you know a few basic tips to look out for. Hopefully this mini-guide has been enlightening to you…You will now be able to tell time in high-end, fashionable style.
