“Green” Swimming Pools

We love our pools. They provide a wonderful place to exercise, and their visual beauty adds so much to the overall feeling of the home. But swimming pools can be expensive to maintain. There are several new products available on the market now that will help to reduce your pool’s maintenance costs.

The most expensive part of owning a pool is the electricity it uses to filter the water. Many homeowners might shy away from having a pool, because of the amount of water used and the energy costs. But the newest energy efficient pool filters use a variable speed pump, which reduces energy usage to 300 watts a day, down from the 2,000 watts that regular pumps require. Water bills can also be a problem. The new cartridge type of filter uses little water and does not require the water to back-wash like old-style filters, which means less strain on the pump.

There are also eco-friendly innovations that use recycled glass tiles and stone, and chlorine is being replaced by more organic cleaning solutions. While pools take some work, they can offer a lifetime of pleasure and increase your home’s value.
