Sometimes, it’s nice to escape from the big city and get away for a little bit of fun. Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands will help you discover what Old Florida is like. This area is full of artistic and family-friendly events. Here’s a look at a few of the events you will discover throughout Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands.

Placida Art Market – Select Saturdays from October to May

This art market opens from 9am to 4pm and provides plenty of paintings, pottery, metal work, crafts and more. Most of the items are from local artists. The art market is found outside the Margaret Albritton Gallery, which is found in the historic fishing village of Placida at 13020 Fishery Road.

Jazz Jam – Fourth Sunday of Every Month

Once January rolls around, the Jazz Jam will start up again. These jazz jam sessions are presented by the Charlotte County Jazz Society at the Port Charlotte Golf Club. They are free to enjoy for club members and $3 for all others in attendance. Every fourth Sunday, they will be held from 1pm to 4pm.

10th Annual Wine & Jazz Festival – February 21st, 2015

Many events will be a part of this festival and will provide plenty of fun for those coming into town for the event. Performances will feature Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Nick Colionne and many others. Artists will perform in Laishley Park in Punta Gorda. The first performances will start at 1pm and tickets are $65 if purchased before the end of the year. VIP tickets are also available and include a private dance area, special events, front seating and more.

Other events found throughout Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands include:

•    Gallery Walks – Held on the third Thursday of every month in Punta Gorda.
•    2015 Florida Winter National Wood Art Expo and Competition – January 10th and 11th at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center
•    7th Annual Hands Across the Harbor – January 31st at Gilchrist Park.

If you’re looking for a good reason to escape the big city and discover a little bit of the Old Florida atmosphere, any of these events will provide a fun road trip.
