Where can you go Star and Moon Gazing near Miami?
August 19, 2015If you want to enjoy the beautiful night sky in Miami, you’ll really love some of the spots that people have scoped out for star and moon gazing. It’s a great way to end a date night or to do something different with your family.
Turn off the electronics, skip the usual restaurant night out and become one with nature by going stargazing in Miami. You don’t have to be an astronomy buff to appreciate the beautiful night skies of South Florida; simply pack a blanket and a picnic and head out to the best spots in town to watch the night sky.
Fox Observatory – Markum Park Road, Sunrise
Head over to Sunrise, Florida to the Fox Observatory where the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association gathers to stargaze every Saturday night. They have an outer dome, a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain and a Brandon refractor along with three telescopes to help with the view. You can bring your own telescope if you choose. Give them a call that you’ll be coming and enjoy the use of their equipment or your own while you look at the moon until dawn.
Weintraub Observatory – Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Science – 3280 South Miami Ave, Miami
If you’re in the Miami area, head over to the Weintraub Observatory to check out the sky from 8-10pm at night. They open early on the first Friday of the month with a free planetarium show. The complex features two Meade telescopes with full range of the sky regardless of the weather. Star gazers will love this stop but when it gets busy, you may not get admitted.
Buehler Planetarium and Observatory – 3501 Davie Road, Davie
If you’re in Davie, check out this Planetarium open three days a week from 8-10pm. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you can gaze at the sky without any of your equipment required. Check out Jupiter, Saturn and the moon.
