A Guide to Historic Coral Gables Homes

October 2, 2018

The City of Coral Gables is the life’s work of visionary George Merrick. Known today for establishing one of the first planned communities in the United States, George Merrick acted as the planner and builder of “The City Beautiful” beginning in the early 1920s. The majestic area was inspired by Mediterranean homes, traces of which are still seen today.

Merrick also created seven unique villages scattered across Coral Gables. Each village was inspired by a foreign country’s unique architectural style. Among these villages are the Pioneer Village, French Normandy Village, Chinese Village, Italian Village, French City Village, French Country Village and Dutch South African Village.

Among the pioneers in the architectural masterpiece also known as Coral Gables, was Richard Kiehnel, who designed El Jardin. Today the building is home to Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, the historic building boasts lavish ceilings, staircases and entertainment areas. This historic home, which was built in 1918 along Miami’s elevated limestone ridge, is registered on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Notable historic buildings in Coral Gables that can be toured include: Viscaya Museum & Gardens, Coral Gables Merrick House, Coral Gables City Hall, Coral Gables Art Cinema, The Biltmore Hotel and Coral Gables Congregational Church.
