Babe Ruth Jersey Sells for a Jaw-Dropping $4.4 Million
June 1, 2012As of Sunday, May 20 there has been a new record set in the world of sports memorabilia…Babe Ruth’s jersey – the very same jersey worn by the nostalgic baseball legend of the sport’s oft-called golden years – was sold for a double-take inducing $4.4 million to Lelands.com, a private memorabilia auction house for the super-wealthy. Interestingly enough, Babe Ruth’s first year jersey was only originally estimated to sell for approximately $1 million, and ended up selling for more than Babe Ruth’s old house is currently listed for in Massachusetts.
Babe Ruth is a legend for his phenomenal ability to hit home runs; in 1927 he was actually able to hit more home runs than any other team in the American League…And yes, that is not a typo, it says ‘team’. His innate, non-steroid influence talent is what makes Babe Ruth’s memorabilia sell for so much today… In fact, at the same auction in which his jersey was sold, one of his hats sold for a little over $500,000. For a comparison, at his peak Babe Ruth made around $80,000 a year. His jersey alone sold for nearly 5 times his cumulative career earnings!
