Weather the Weather in Your Waterfront Home

March 21, 2013

Waterfront homes can sometimes have an additional cost hidden in their picturesque location. Generally speaking, waterfront homes are more susceptible to wear-and-tear from the elements than the average home. Often, homeowners of waterfront properties—especially those that are adjacent to open coastlines—will need to invest in extra measures to protect their homes from seasonal damage.

Depending on your area, your waterfront property may require special landscaping, corrosion-resistant stainless steel locks, impact windows and doors, storm shutters or other weather-proofing measures. Seasonal residents will need to factor in any weather-proofing measures and maintenance that will need to be undertaken during periods that the home is unoccupied. In areas that are often in the paths of seasonal hurricanes, extra insurance may be required, so make sure to confer with your Realtor® regarding additional homeowner costs that may not be immediately calculated into the overall cost of home maintenance.
